The comparison at a glance

Private day, 8 tastings and lunch

The private version is priced per group, about $1,666 to $2,000 depending on the page and date. The vehicle is reserved for your party, with pickup and drop-off at your accommodation, and lunch is at a family-run house or a good restaurant. The rating is 4.8 to 5 out of 5, but from fewer than 30 reviews, a weaker signal than for the group tours. One traveler felt the description promised more than they got, and another wondered whether all 8 tastings took place.

VIP day with Michelin lunch

The VIP option is the most expensive in our selection: about $1,704 per group, with 8 tastings and a lunch advertised as "Michelin" (ask exactly what that means before booking). It is rated 4.8 out of 5, but from only 9 reviews. One critical review mentions limited tastings at Boizel and a disappointing view at lunch: ask the organizer for the program in detail before paying.

Tastings, cathedral and pickup

This tour is rated 4.8 out of 5 from 682 reviews, at about $404 per person. It lasts about 11 h with a guide, pickup in Paris, Reims Cathedral and several houses; the house visited depends on availability (Mumm and Nicolas Feuillatte are given as examples). Travelers praise the guides and the lunch; one review notes that rain on the way back added about three hours, and another found one of the champagnes mediocre. A private option exists.

Minivan day, 8 tastings and lunch

This day has the most reviews: 4.8 out of 5 from over 1,500 reviews, between $364 and $380 depending on the page. The air-conditioned minivan carries 8 people at most, pickup is in central Paris, and the small-group drop-off is listed at the Hôtel de Ville. The most frequent complaint: the houses visited are not always stated in advance, and big names can be swapped.

Small group, 6 tastings

The small group is rated 4.9 out of 5 from 369 reviews, at about $259. The listing mentions six tastings and a route centered on the Nicolas Feuillatte house, with, depending on the itinerary, Reims Cathedral, lunch in Épernay and Hautvillers Abbey: check the program for your date. It is the cheapest option on the page, with good traveler feedback.

What is not included and the pitfalls

  • The length: expect 10 to 12 h, with road time both ways. Rain or traffic can lengthen the return.
  • The house visited: it often depends on availability. If you want a specific house, choose an offer that names it, or a private option.
  • The number of tastings: it is advertised as "at least"; do not take it as a guaranteed volume.
  • Extras: drinks outside the tastings, tips and bottle purchases are on you.
  • Alcohol: only a tour with a driver (or the train) avoids driving after the tastings.
  • Cancellation: conditions vary by offer, read them before paying.

Going on your own (train)

It is possible and often cheaper, but you must book the visits yourself.

  • Reims: the direct TGV from Paris-Est takes about 45 minutes (listed at 0 h 46 on SNCF Connect). The center is walkable. Entry to the cathedral is generally free; the tower climb starts from the Palais du Tau (249 steps, small groups, booking advised, seasonal slots): check the dates on the official site before you go.
  • Épernay: allow about 1 h 15 to 1 h 20 by train from Paris-Est (TER Nomad via Château-Thierry, per SNCF Connect). The famous Avenue de Champagne and its cellars are UNESCO-listed since 2015 with the Champagne hillsides, houses and cellars.
  • The houses: visits cost about €20 to €90 depending on the house and package, and booking is needed, sometimes several weeks ahead, especially on weekends from May to October.
  • Linking the two towns: plan a regional train or a taxi between Reims and Épernay, and check the timetable so you do not miss the return.

Our guide to the Paris train stations helps with leaving from Gare de l'Est. Reims alone (cathedral plus one house) fits in a day; Reims and Épernay together need a very full day or a night on site.
