There isn't just one: the best time to visit mostly depends on what you're after — good weather, a tight budget, fewer crowds, or a specific event like Christmas. Here's what to know before you choose.
Winter (December-February), quiet and bright despite the cold
Temperatures hover around 3-9°C, with sunshine at its lowest in January. It's the quietest stretch of the year outside the holidays, and often the cheapest for accommodation, apart from the Christmas break, which pushes crowds and prices back up.
Spring (March-May), the most celebrated season
Temperatures climb steadily from around 13°C in March to 20°C in May, with Paris's gardens in bloom. It's a high-demand season for visitors, especially in April-May, so book earlier than you would for winter if you're aiming for this window.
Summer (June-August), peak crowds and peak heat
Temperatures hit their highest, around 24-26°C in July and August, with Paris Plages set up along the riverbanks and Bastille Day on 14 July as a highlight. It's the year's clearest high season: higher prices, busier sites, but also the longest days to make the most of the city.
Autumn (September-November), a solid middle ground
September stays mild (around 21°C), with European Heritage Days opening places normally closed to the public. Crowds drop off noticeably after the summer, before ticking back up toward year's end.
Roland-Garros and Fête de la Musique, two late-spring/early-summer markers
Roland-Garros runs late May into early June, and Fête de la Musique falls every year on 21 June: two events that might shape your dates depending on your interests, but that also push up crowds in certain neighborhoods on the day.
December, the "Christmas in Paris" period on its own
Lights and Christmas markets transform the city from late November into early January, at the cost of higher crowds and prices than a "normal" December: a season worth choosing deliberately rather than by default.
Tips
For fewer crowds and a tighter budget: aim for January-February or November, outside school holidays. For pleasant outdoor weather and terrace season: spring or early autumn. For quiet museums: winter, on a weekday. For families: French school holidays bring more kid-friendly programming, at the cost of bigger crowds.
