The Gare Montparnasse area: pros and cons

Pros. The Montparnasse – Bienvenue station gathers lines 4, 6, 12 and 13: you reach Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Latin Quarter or Montmartre easily. The area has many hotels, so there is a real range of prices. The Luxembourg Gardens and Montparnasse Cemetery are within walking distance, and the Montparnasse Tower gives a view over Paris.
Cons. The streets around the station and boulevard du Montparnasse are busy and noisy; ask for a room on the courtyard. The architecture dates from the 1970s, far from the postcard Paris. For a first visit, a hotel in the Marais or near Saint-Germain is nicer in the evening: compare in where to stay in Paris for a first visit.

Our tips
- Late arrival or dawn departure: choose a hotel within 5 minutes, especially with luggage. The station corridors are long; allow a margin to reach the platform.
- For stations and trains in general: read Paris stations and trains to see which station serves which region.
- Book early for holiday departure weekends and events: the station is one of the busiest in Paris.
- Evening visits: a one-hour Seine cruise is easy to reach by metro from Montparnasse; the Montparnasse Tower is the area's other evening option.
