Kayaking and Paddleboarding in Paris: Where to Paddle on the Seine, the Canal and the Bassin de la Villette
The easiest place to kayak in Paris is the Bassin de la Villette (19th), where kayak, canoe and rowing introductions are offered free all year, and in summer with Paris Plages (City of Paris). On the Seine in central Paris there is no free hire: you paddle with a club, at events or on a guided outing (for example a paddleboard crossing of Paris). Elsewhere in the Île-de-France region, the Canal de l'Ourcq and the Marne can be rented by the hour or half day.
Highlights

Paddleboarding on the Seine
The Nautic Stand Up Paddle Paris Crossing is a stand-up paddleboard crossing of Paris, run as an event. Paddling under the bridges with the quays and the Eiffel Tower in view is only possible on such supervised outings.

The Bassin de la Villette
The largest body of water in central Paris, lined with lively quays: kayak, canoe and rowing introductions all year and summer activities with Paris Plages, according to the City of Paris.
Alternatives outside the centre
On the Canal de l'Ourcq (Sevran) a club rents kayaks (about €30 for one seat, €50 for two, €60 for three, according to a 2026 guide); on the Marne, at Neuilly-Plaisance, self-service kayaks start at about €14.50 per person. On Lac Daumesnil (12th) you can rent rowing boats for about €15 to €16 an hour.

Tips
- Never go out alone on the Seine: boat traffic is heavy and navigation is regulated. Choose a supervised outing or a club. Check prices, the level required and the weather before booking: the prices quoted are guide readings, not guaranteed rates. Wear a life jacket and quick-drying clothes, and bring sunscreen. As kayaking on the Seine is not freely available, a cruise with commentary is the easiest alternative to book.
How to get there
Metro Jaurès (lines 2, 5 and 7bis) or Stalingrad (lines 2, 5 and 7), both on the Bassin de la Villette, Paris 19th. See also our Parc de la Villette page.
