The Gare de Lyon area: pros and cons

The west facade of Gare de Lyon

Pros. Line 14 links the station to Châtelet in a few minutes and line 1 crosses Paris east to west, as far as the Champs-Élysées. Bastille and the Marais are close. For leisure, Bercy Village and Bercy Park are on foot.

Cons. The streets around the station are very busy and noisy, especially in the evening; as in any big station, watch your bags. Little architectural charm, and few interesting restaurants right in front of the station. If you want the Paris atmosphere, look at where to stay in Paris for a first visit.
