Step 1: the Paris Saint-Lazare to Bayeux train

- The journey: direct trains (TER and Intercités) link Paris Saint-Lazare and Bayeux in about 2 h 15 based on August 2026 timetables. Some journeys with a change at Caen take about 2 h 40.
- Timetables: departures every one to two hours during the day according to timetable sites; engineering works can change the journey time. Check and buy on SNCF Connect.
- A day return? It is possible, but the first morning train and the last evening train leave little time on site. A night in Bayeux is more comfortable.
Step 2: on the ground from Bayeux
Bayeux is not on the coast: the sites are spread along the shore, several kilometres from town. Three options:
- A local guide for a half day: small-group half days leave from Bayeux. One local operator lists about €75 per adult for around 4 hours (Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, the American cemetery, with an English-speaking guide). The Bayeux tourist office also offers minibus tours for 1 to 8 people, departing at 8:00 am or 1:15 pm with museum admission included; check the tourist office website for prices. Book ahead in high season.
- A taxi or private driver: the most flexible, to be agreed before you set off. Ask for the price of the day and the stops included.
- The bus: Nomad line 120 links Bayeux to the American cemetery and Omaha Beach (about €3.90 a trip according to Frommer's), but services are infrequent; check times on nomad.normandie.fr before relying on it.
A sample day
- Morning train from Paris Saint-Lazare, arriving in Bayeux in late morning.
- Lunch in Bayeux, then a guided half day in the afternoon (Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, the American cemetery).
- Night in Bayeux, then the historic centre the next day before taking the train back.
For a first visit with only one day, the coach from Paris is still simpler. With two days, the train plus a night in Bayeux leaves time to stop and take it in.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Respect: the American cemetery is a place of remembrance. Free entry, no reservation, according to the official site (ABMC), 9 am to 5 pm every day except 25 December and 1 January; last entry half an hour before closing. Dress soberly and keep your voice down.
- The last train: plan the guide so you are back in Bayeux well before the last departure to Paris.
- Meals: generally not included in half-day tours.
- Mont-Saint-Michel: do not combine it with the beaches on the same day; see our guide to Mont-Saint-Michel from Paris.
- Cancellations: conditions vary by operator; read them before paying.
Which option to choose?
- Only one day available: the coach from Paris, see the comparison.
- Two days, no car: train to Bayeux, a night there and a guided half day.
- You want more flexibility: a rental car or a driver; to rent, you can compare car rental offers.
