What does repatriation insurance cover?
Medical repatriation is organised by your insurer's assistance company: its doctors decide whether transport is medically necessary, then it takes place by ambulance, scheduled flight with a medical escort or air ambulance. Contracts usually also cover returning the body in case of death. An evacuation, by contrast, moves the patient to the nearest hospital able to treat them, without necessarily bringing them home. Read your contract for the cases where the insurer can refuse (pre-existing condition, excluded activity).
When do you really need it?
The further you go from a health system comparable to yours, the more the cover matters: trips outside the European Union, remote regions (safari, mountains, islands), risky activities (diving, scooters, high-altitude hiking) and long stays. Within the European Union, the European Health Insurance Card gives access to public care, but it does not refund repatriation. Consulates do not pay the hospital either: the French foreign ministry said, in an old parliamentary answer, that it does not in principle cover hospital costs abroad.

How much does a repatriation cost?
There is no single official price. As an order of magnitude, a French insurance comparison site (read on 24 October 2026) quotes about €10,000 to €40,000 for repatriation on a scheduled flight with medical assistance, €40,000 to €250,000 by air ambulance, and €500 to €3,000 for a local ambulance. These are commercial figures, given as a guide only. One assistance company cites a real case: 8 days in intensive care at €18,200 plus a repatriation by air ambulance at €17,000, €35,200 in total.
How much does repatriation insurance cost?
The price depends on the country, the duration and the type of return covered. A comparison site quotes about €18 to €30 a month for travel insurance that includes repatriation; this is a single commercial source, given as a guide. The cover is often already included in a travel contract or a bank card: check before buying to avoid duplicates.
Your options compared
A traveller really has four options, and they do not cover the same things. The table compares them; the exact terms are in each contract.
| Option | What it covers | Limits to know |
|---|---|---|
| European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or UK GHIC | Medically necessary public care, on the host country's terms (EU/EEA, Switzerland) | No repatriation, no private clinics; part of the cost may stay with you |
| Premium bank card | Medical costs and repatriation during the trip, often only if you paid for the trip with the card | Ceilings, exclusions and maximum trip length vary: read the notice |
| Your usual health insurer | Sometimes a refund of care abroad | Often after you pay upfront; repatriation rarely included |
| Standard travel insurance (per trip or annual) | Medical costs, assistance and repatriation, with limits set by each contract | Exclusions (pre-existing conditions, risky activities) and excess to read |
| SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (Essential plan) | Medical care up to US$250,000, evacuation up to US$100,000 | No pre-existing conditions, no trip cancellation |
| Trip-cancellation insurance | Refunds a prepaid trip if you must cancel for a covered reason | A different product, not part of SafetyWing's Essential plan |

How to choose: a checklist
- Check the care limit and the evacuation or repatriation limit, not only the price.
- Read the definition of pre-existing conditions and the list of excluded activities.
- See whether the insurer pays the hospital directly or makes you pay upfront.
- Check the cover period: start date, end date, and a trip already under way.
- Keep the 24-hour assistance number and the policy in your phone.
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy SafetyWing once you have arrived?
According to SafetyWing's website (read on 24 October 2026), you can sign up before leaving or at any point during your trip. Check the cover start date in the terms.
Does the insurance cover trip cancellation?
Not SafetyWing's Essential plan. Cancellation is a separate insurance, which we do not offer here.
Is repatriation always to my home country?
Not always. Depending on the contract, the assistance company may first evacuate to a better-equipped hospital, then arrange the return when the patient's condition allows. It decides the means of transport, on medical advice.
Who pays if I have no insurance?
You do. The hospital bills the patient, and a medical transport is paid before or after departure depending on the provider. That is why the cost figures matter more than the price of the cover.
