Considered one of the most treasured jewels of France's heritage, the Chantilly estate comprises the château, the park, and the Grandes Écuries (Great Stables). It is located in the Oise department and today belongs to the Institut de France.

The Painting Gallery

The Château de Chantilly houses the second-largest collection of Old Master paintings in France after the Louvre, displayed in its Painting Gallery. Must-see works by Raphael, Jean Clouet, Nicolas Poussin, and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot line the gallery's walls.

Le Nôtre's Garden

André Le Nôtre laid out this garden around two perpendicular axes: the Manche and the Grand Canal. For the best view of the grand French-style flowerbeds, stand on the north façade at the end of the Grand Canal.

The Anglo-Chinese Garden

The Anglo-Chinese Garden is one of three gardens within the estate's 115-hectare park. Sweeping green spaces with plenty of activities are on offer for just 8 euros. Set inside a rustic little cottage, the "Le Hameau" restaurant serves hearty, flavorful local cuisine to visitors.

The Grandes Écuries

Opened in June 2013, the horse museum displays nearly 200 objects and works of art on the theme of horsemanship. Afterward, come see breathtaking equestrian shows for a special rate of 30 euros.

A downloadable visitor's booklet lets you discover all the estate's treasures and have fun with treasure-hunt games. Young and old alike will enjoy the green spaces and every kind of game and activity: the Princes' Maze, the Grandchildren's Hamlet, the small park, the kangaroo enclosure, the little train ride through the park (3 euros for children, 5 euros for adults), and the golf-cart tour of the park (32 euros per hour).

How to get there

The most convenient way to reach the Château de Chantilly is by car. The estate is located 40 km from central Paris via the A1 or A3 motorway, direction "Chantilly." Budget 4 euros for parking. Otherwise, take RER line D (45 minutes) or an SNCF train from Gare du Nord and get off at "Chantilly-Gouvieux." Then take a shuttle. You can also take the Paris City Vision Paris-Chantilly shuttle (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday).
