Maison de Victor Hugo: tickets, opening hours and highlights

At 6 Place des Vosges, in the Hôtel de Rohan-Guéméné, the Maison de Victor Hugo occupies the apartment where the writer lived for sixteen years, from 1832 to 1848. On the second floor, seven rooms in a row trace his life before, during and after his exile, through furniture, his own drawings, manuscripts and mementos. The museum opened in 1903 thanks to a donation from Paul Meurice, Hugo's friend and executor. It belongs to Paris Musées, like Hauteville House, the writer's home in exile on Guernsey. Since the 2019-2020 renovation, a garden has been laid out in the inner courtyard, with a café you can visit without a ticket.

Highlights

The Chinese Salon

During his exile, Victor Hugo designed this decor himself for Hauteville Fairy, Juliette Drouet's house on Guernsey. Its painted and carved panels were later reassembled in Paris and make up the most surprising room in the apartment.

The Red Salon

With its red hangings, this salon recalls the apartment on Place Royale, the former name of Place des Vosges, in the days when Hugo entertained artists and writers here. Family portraits and period furniture evoke the years before his exile.

The Avenue d'Eylau bedroom

The last room of the tour recreates the bedroom where Victor Hugo died in 1885, in his house on Avenue d'Eylau, now Avenue Victor-Hugo. Look out for his Louis XIII-style bed.

Exceptionally, from 11 June to 22 November 2026, admission is charged, permanent collections included, because of the exhibition "Hugo et l'architecture. De la pierre à la plume", devoted to the role of architecture in his work, from Notre-Dame de Paris to his drawings of castles: €11, reduced rate €9, free for under-18s (prices checked in September 2026). Booking a time slot online is recommended. Outside this period, the permanent collections are free. The ticket office closes at 5:15 pm.
