In the Nouvelle Athènes neighbourhood, the Museum of Romantic Life occupies painter Ary Scheffer’s former home. Paintings, sculptures and George Sand memorabilia explore connections between artists, writers and musicians in the nineteenth century. Reopened in February 2026, the museum presents a renewed exploration of Romanticism in a house and its former studios in the ninth arrondissement.

Scheffer moved to rue Chaptal in 1830 and welcomed the artists and writers of his day. Look at the conservatory and its ironwork, reminders of the house’s history; George Sand visited this place but did not live here.

David d’Angers’s bronze medallion of Delphine Gay, made in 1828, puts a face to this literary world. Compare these portraits with the George Sand memorabilia and paintings displayed in the rooms.
