In Nouvelle Athènes, the Gustave Moreau Museum preserves the Symbolist painter’s home and studios. His paintings and drawings filled with biblical and mythological figures cover the walls of spacious rooms. A spiral staircase links the two studios arranged to display his work. Visits currently include the second and third floors; opening of other spaces, including the apartments, is not guaranteed.

In 1895, Moreau had the upper floors of his house converted to exhibit his works. A spiral staircase links these north-lit rooms; take time to examine the large compositions and studies displayed around you.
The painter’s palette
The palette preserved in the museum recalls the practical work behind the Symbolist scenes. Compare its paint traces with the colours of the paintings to see another aspect of the studio.

Admission costs €8, or €6 reduced, with a ticket valid for seven days for the Moreau and Jean-Jacques Henner collections (prices checked in September 2026). The collections are free on the first Sunday of the month, but booking is strongly recommended. The museum has several staircases and no lift. Check the day’s information before setting out: industrial action can cause occasional closures.
