How many hours do you need to leave the airport?

Count the trip there and back, the checks and a margin before check-in. Our cautious rule, to adjust for your airline:

Keep in mind: leaving the international zone means going through border control on arrival, then security and border police on the way back. Also check whether your bags are checked through to your final destination or must be collected, and whether the layover is on one ticket or two separate tickets (in that case the airline does not protect you if you miss the second flight).

Our first choice: the private tour with a driver-guide

On a layover, the point is not to see everything but not to miss your flight. With this 4-hour tour, an English-speaking driver-guide collects you at the airport and takes you back: they know the travel times and handle the return. The announced route covers the Grand Palais, the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur, Place Vendôme and the Louvre, with an optional last hour for other sights or a traditional meal. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. The listing mentions "Orly" in its description: confirm when booking that pickup is indeed at Roissy-CDG, and the terminal. See the offer.

For other private tours from CDG, see Paris: Private Layover Tour with Airport Pickup & Drop-Off; we could not compare their ratings and prices.

The RER B, if you go alone

The RER B links the Roissy terminals to the city centre: Châtelet-Les Halles, Saint-Michel or Gare du Nord in 35 to 50 minutes, every 6 to 15 minutes or so, from 5 a.m. until past midnight. Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1 station serves terminals 1 and 3; Charles de Gaulle 2 station serves terminal 2. The "Paris Region <> Airports" ticket costs €14; buy it before boarding. Details are in our guide how to get from the airport to central Paris and in the one on the metro and RER. Check the line's status before leaving: a disruption can eat your margin.

Taxi

A fixed fare applies between Roissy and Paris: €56 to the Right Bank and €65 to the Left Bank. Use only the official taxi rank; see taxis in Paris.

Where to leave your luggage

There is a left-luggage office in terminal 2, in the interchange hall of Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 station (level 4, facing the Sheraton hotel); an unofficial site gives opening hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with ID check and X-ray screening. We found no official price: check the Paris Aéroport website before counting on it. Travelling light remains the safest.

Visa and exit rules

Leaving the international zone amounts to entering France, and therefore the Schengen area. Depending on your nationality, a short-stay visa or an airport transit visa may be required; service-public.fr notes that some nationalities need a transit visa even without leaving the international zone. We could not verify the list in force in October 2026: check the French embassy website or service-public.fr before booking, and never count on a visit if you have any doubt. Bring a valid passport and the documents for your onward journey.

What to see in 4 hours

Do not aim for museums: queues and travel eat the time. Better a tour of the big viewpoints (Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur, the surroundings of the Louvre) and a meal. For a full day, see Paris in one day.

What to check before booking

  • The airport and terminal. Roissy-CDG or Orly: the listing mentions both.
  • Admissions. They are usually excluded: an Eiffel Tower climb or a Louvre visit is booked separately.
  • The return. Plan to be back at the airport at least 3 hours before a long-haul flight.
  • Cancellation. Free up to 24 hours before according to the listing; a delayed flight can change your plans.
  • Luggage. See whether the vehicle can take it.

Which offer to choose

  • 8 hours or more, little margin: the private tour with a driver-guide.
  • Small budget, independent: the RER B, keeping a margin of at least 3 hours on the way back.
  • Short layover (under 8 hours): stay at the airport.
  • Arriving in Paris for good: our guide to the Paris airports and the comparison of airport transfers.
