SNCF must receive notices 48 hours ahead, so the real scale of the strike depends on individual declarations. A meeting between unions and management is planned for 3 November in Saint-Denis: the call may be lifted or kept. The unions are asking for pay rises. The next day, 6 November, the inaugural run of the TGV M between Paris Gare de Lyon and Marseille is planned; it is not yet known whether it will be affected.
How to check, step by step
- On 3 November: see whether the union-management meeting lifted or confirmed the call (national press, franceinfo).
- On 4 November around 5 pm: open SNCF Connect for long-distance trains and the Transilien site for RER and suburban trains.
- On the evening of 4 November: check ratp.fr or Île-de-France Mobilités for the metro, RER A and B and buses.
- On the morning of the 5th: look at the Préfecture de Police (@prefpolice) for banned streets and closed stations, and at the stations affected (Nord, Est, Lyon, Austerlitz, Montparnasse, Saint-Lazare).
For closed stations on earlier protest days and tips on the spot, read Protests in Paris: what to do and what to avoid.
What if a strike day goes wrong? In crowded transport or on long walks, a fall or a dizzy spell is still possible. Outside the European Union, an emergency-room visit or a night in hospital in Paris is charged at full price. A health and repatriation insurance (SafetyWing, bought online, for the length of your trip) covers medical care and the trip home. It does not cover trip cancellation. See our travel insurance guide.
Your train tickets: wait for the transport plan

Do not change your tickets before the transport plan is published. If your train is cancelled, exchange or refund is usually free, but refunds are not always automatic: you sometimes have to cancel yourself in your customer account. Plan a fallback: another train earlier in the morning, a coach, or one more night in Paris. The stations and their connections are described in Paris train stations.
Getting to or from the airport
The airports are not covered by the notice, but the access is: the RER B to Roissy-CDG is often the first hit, and blocked streets lengthen journeys. Three options:
- RER B, metro and buses: check the day before; allow at least one extra hour.
- Taxi: the flat fare is €56 to the Right Bank and €65 to the Left Bank from Roissy, about €44 and €36 from Orly (Préfecture de Police, October 2026). Queues are longer on strike days.
- Private transfer booked in advance: a driver waits for you on arrival and drops you at your address, without depending on the RER. It is the simplest option with luggage or children; check the cancellation terms when you book.
All modes of transport are compared in Getting from the airport to central Paris, and transfer offers in Paris airport transfer: which offer to choose.
What to do in Paris that day
If the metro is hit, stay in your area and aim for walks or places off the routes: the museums of western Paris, the Canal Saint-Martin, Montmartre. Avoid Bastille, Nation and République, the usual march points, as well as the big stations. The metro usually holds up better than the RER during an SNCF strike, but wait for the forecasts of 4 November before planning. For general trip preparation, see Paris metro and RER.
