Beyond department-store rooftops and paid observation decks, Paris offers a handful of elevated viewpoints that are entirely free and open whenever the site is, thanks to the city's natural terrain rather than a building. Hills, parks and esplanades let you take in the capital without a ticket or a queue.
The Sacré-Cœur forecourt
Paris's natural high point, 130 meters up on the Montmartre hill, the forecourt in front of the basilica offers an open view across almost the entire city, from the Eiffel Tower to the Seine. Access to the forecourt is entirely free; only climbing the basilica's dome, higher still, costs money.
The Trocadéro esplanade
Facing the Eiffel Tower across the Seine, this esplanade offers the most photographed view of the monument, especially at sunset. It's a free viewpoint reachable directly from Trocadéro metro station, with no particular walk required.
Parc des Buttes-Chaumont
From the Temple de la Sibylle, perched atop the artificial rock that dominates the park's lake, the view stretches across northeastern Paris and, on a clear day, all the way to the Montmartre hill in the distance. The park itself, with its rugged terrain left over from a former quarry, is worth the visit on its own.
The Belleville park belvedere

Parc de Montsouris
In the 14th arrondissement, the park's sloping lawns offer an open view over the rooftops of southern Paris, a quieter and less crowded alternative to the viewpoints in the center, ideal for a picnic with a panorama.
The bridges over the Seine
Without gaining any height, some of Paris's bridges offer free views among the city's most iconic: Pont Alexandre III with its vista toward Les Invalides and the Grand Palais, or Pont de Bir-Hakeim, whose double deck and elevated metro tracks have been popularized by several films shot there.
Tips
For a view over the city rather than just a pretty bridge, favor the elevated spots: Sacré-Cœur, Buttes-Chaumont and Belleville each look out over a good part of Paris and work especially well for a late-afternoon visit, when the low light shows the city at its best.
