Île aux Cygnes: Allée des Cygnes, Statue of Liberty Replica and Access

Updated on October 8, 2026

The Île aux Cygnes is an artificial island in the Seine between the 15th and 16th arrondissements, about 890 metres long and 11 metres wide. Created in 1825 and reinforced with masonry in 1827, it is now a tree-lined pedestrian promenade, the Allée des Cygnes, between the Bir-Hakeim and Grenelle bridges. People come for the calm, the views over the Seine and the replica of the Statue of Liberty.

Highlights

Standing 11.50 metres tall, this bronze statue was inaugurated on 4 July 1889 by President Sadi Carnot, a gift from the American community in Paris. It stands at the downstream tip of the island, by the Grenelle bridge, and has faced west, toward New York, since 1937.

The Bir-Hakeim bridge

At the upstream end of the island, this two-level bridge carries a roadway below and the viaduct of metro line 6 above. The view toward the Eiffel Tower from the bridge is very popular.

The Allée des Cygnes

Laid out as a promenade in 1878, it runs the whole length of the island under a double row of trees, with benches and a rare calm in the middle of Paris.

Practical info

Tips

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk from one end to the other, more if you sit down. The island combines well with the nearby Eiffel Tower: the alley gives views of the Seine and its bridges. In the evening, the lit bridges make the walk pleasant.

How to get there

Metro Bir-Hakeim (line 6) for the upstream end, or Charles Michels (line 10) for the downstream end, near the Grenelle bridge. RER C is also nearby. The alley is reached by steps from the bridges.
