Mont-Saint-Michel in a day: what you need to know

No private car can reach the rock: you leave your vehicle (or get off the coach) at the car parks on the mainland, then reach the Mount by free shuttle or on foot. The village is freely accessible, day and night; only the abbey charges admission. Two figures to plan your day:

  • 3 to 4 hours of travel each way from Paris, depending on the means of transport.
  • 45 minutes to 1 hour on foot from the car parks to the abbey entrance, according to the site's operator, with many steps in the village and in the abbey.

Allow at least 4 hours on site to climb up to the abbey, visit it, walk round the ramparts and wander through the village. Any less and the visit becomes a race.

Option 1: by train and coach, without a car

This is the cheapest solution for a solo traveller or a couple. There are two routes; train timetables can be checked on SNCF Connect, and how the Paris stations work is detailed in our guide to Paris train stations.

Via Rennes: TGV then Keolis Armor coach

  • Paris-Montparnasse → Rennes by TGV: about 1h30, around twenty trains a day, TGV INOUI or OUIGO (low fares when booking early, prices vary by date). Montparnasse station is at the foot of the Tour Montparnasse.
  • Rennes → Mont-Saint-Michel by Keolis Armor coach: departure from the Rennes coach station, next to the SNCF station, about 1h15 journey, several return trips a day, Sundays and public holidays included. The coach stops at the terminus of the regular routes, near the shuttle square.
  • Coach fares: from €15 single, €25 return, €12 and €20 for under-26s, free for under-4s. No tickets are sold on board: book online, which also guarantees your seat.

With the connection, allow 3h to 3h30 from Paris to the Mount. Check the time of the last return coach before buying your TGV ticket: it is what sets the end of your day.

Via Pontorson: the "Mont-Saint-Michel train"

The Normandy region runs a direct Nomad train between Paris-Montparnasse and Pontorson – Mont-Saint-Michel station, 9 km from the Mount, at weekends all year round and every day in the summer season. The journey takes from 3h53, and a coach provides the connection to the foot of the Mount. The train + coach package is listed at €32 per journey per adult from Paris-Montparnasse or Versailles. With 8 hours of travel for the return trip, this train is better suited to a stay with a night on site.

Option 2: by car, car park and "Le Passeur" shuttle

The bridge-walkway linking the mainland to Mont-Saint-Michel

The fastest route takes the A13 (toll) to Caen then the A84 (toll-free) towards Avranches: about 360 km and 4 hours without traffic jams. Official car park prices for a car, first 30 minutes free:

Period Up to 3h Up to 6h Up to 24h Evening (6.30pm – 3am)
Low season (1 January – 28 February, 2 November – 31 December) €10 €12 €14 Free
Mid season (1 March – 30 June, 1 September – 1 November) €16 €19 €22 Free
High season (1 July – 31 August) €20 €24 €28 €15

Prices as observed in September 2026. A €2 discount applies if you book online for arrival before 10am or after 3pm.

The Le Passeur shuttle is free. It takes about 12 minutes and drops you 350 m from the ramparts. It runs from 8.30am to 10pm from November to February, from 7.30am to 11pm in spring and autumn, and from 7am to 1am in July-August. On foot, the walkway is 2.2 km from the car parks, about 45 minutes.

Option 3: an organised tour from Paris

Several Paris agencies offer a return coach trip with a guide:

  • Duration: about 14 hours, leaving around 7am and returning to Paris around 9.30pm.
  • Time on site: 4h to 4h30, including a guided tour of the abbey.
  • Price: from about €125 to over €165 per person depending on what is included (abbey ticket, lunch, hotel pick-up).

Read the conditions: some offers exclude the abbey visit on free-admission or closure days. To compare with other day trips, see our selection of day trips from Paris.

Tides: when to come and what not to do

The Mount is surrounded by the sea only during very high tides; the rest of the time, it is ringed by sand and salt meadows. The official 2026 tide calendar listed only two major high tides (14 August and 12 September), both now past. For 2027, consult the annual calendar published by the Mount's public body before fixing a date: it also gives the times of high water.

  • On days of major high tides, the operator advises arriving 1 to 2 hours before high water and following the instructions: the water rises fast.
  • Never set off alone on foot across the bay: quicksand and the tide make the crossing dangerous without an approved guide.

Sleeping on site or nearby

A night on site lets you see the Mount in the evening, once the tours have left, and climb up to the abbey as soon as it opens. The village hotels are few and expensive, and luggage has to be carried up on foot. Most hotels are on the mainland, at the place called La Caserne, served by the free shuttle; Pontorson and Avranches are more affordable. From September to June, the car park is free from 6.30pm to 3am.

Normandy within reach of Paris

The rest of Normandy is served from Saint-Lazare station.

D-Day beaches: Caen, Bayeux, Colleville

The American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, above Omaha Beach

  • Caen is about 2 hours from Saint-Lazare by direct Nomad train. The Mémorial de Caen opens from 9am to 7pm; full price €20.80, reduced €18.50, free for under-10s, family pass €53. Ticket sales on site stop 1h15 before closing.
  • Bayeux is 2h10 – 2h25 from Paris, with around fifteen trains a day. Note: the Tapestry museum is closed for works until autumn 2027, and the tapestry is on display at the British Museum in London from 10 September 2026 to 11 July 2027.
  • The American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, above Omaha Beach, is free and open every day from 9am to 5pm, except 25 December and 1 January.

Without a car, the D-Day sites are scattered and poorly served: book a minibus tour from Bayeux or Caen, or hire a car locally.

Étretat

The cliffs of Étretat and the Porte d'Aval arch

By car, allow about 2h45 via the A13 and the Pont de Tancarville. By train, there are two options from Saint-Lazare: get off at Bréauté-Beuzeville then take coach 504 to Étretat, or go on to Le Havre then take bus 13 or 21. Bring good shoes for the cliff paths.

Honfleur

Honfleur has no railway station. Take the train to Le Havre then Nomad coach 122 (about thirty minutes), or to Trouville-Deauville then a Nomad coach: about 3 hours in total.

Rouen

This is the easiest Normandy outing: around thirty direct trains a day between Saint-Lazare and Rouen Rive Droite, in 1h10 to 1h30. The cathedral, painted in a series by Monet (several canvases are at the Musée d'Orsay), the Gros-Horloge and the old town can be visited on foot from the station. To connect these places with the painters' story, see our itinerary in the footsteps of the Impressionists.

Giverny

Claude Monet's house and gardens are less than an hour by train from Saint-Lazare (Vernon-Giverny station), from April to late October. Everything is detailed in our guide to visiting Giverny from Paris.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Underestimating the day: Paris – Mont-Saint-Michel – Paris in a day means 8 hours of travel for 4 hours on site. If you can, spend a night on site or nearby.
  • "Mont-Saint-Michel + D-Day beaches" tours in a single day: the two sites are far apart, and you spend most of the day on the coach. Only book this kind of tour if it includes a night in Normandy.
  • Forgetting the return coach time: it is the coach, not the train, that sets the end of your day.
  • Ignoring the tides: no walking alone in the bay.
  • Arriving late at the abbey: last admission at 5pm from September to April.
