The Musée Marmottan Monet (2 rue Louis-Boilly, Paris 16th) holds the largest Monet collection in the world; ticket €14, open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm (until 9pm on Thursdays), metro La Muette. It stands near the Ranelagh garden: art critic Paul Marmottan bequeathed his mansion and personal collections to the Académie des Beaux-Arts on his death in 1932.

On the ground floor, you'll discover exceptional pieces of Empire furniture as well as breathtaking tapestries. The Musée Marmottan Monet is still little known to the general public, which is a shame: unlike traditional museums, it's a human-scale museum with an intimate and unexpected atmosphere.

- Don't wait for temporary exhibitions to visit the Musée Marmottan Monet. The crowds would keep you from fully enjoying the distinctive atmosphere of this former mansion. To see the garden Monet painted, allow a day at Giverny, about 75 km west of Paris. The easiest way is a half-day trip to Giverny from Paris, transport included.

How to get there
The Musée Marmottan Monet is located at 2 Rue Louis-Boilly. It's accessible by public transportation. Take metro line 9 and get off at "La Muette" station, or take the RER C and exit at "Boulainvilliers" station. Bus lines 22, 32, 52, and 63 also drop you off near the museum.
