Where to eat a good croissant in Paris
The Sentier (2nd) is the Greater Paris winner's area, and rue Montorgueil is next door. Bakeries awarded for their baguette, like those in our guide to the best bakeries, also sell viennoiseries: use it for addresses and closing days. For a sit-down sweet break, see the tea rooms of Paris.
Tips for choosing well
- Go early: the best croissants sell out before 10 am, especially at weekends.
- Look at the layers: honeycombed inside, golden outside, with a clear smell of butter.
- Check the closing day: many bakeries close one fixed day a week.
- Prices: they vary by address, so read the window display rather than a general figure.
